Norfolk Ship Repair, a member of the United States Marine Repair family
of ship repair facilities situated primarily in major Navy and
commercial megaports, is a highly regarded member of the Norfolk,
Virginia, community. With a long, rich past, the shipyard has
been a part of the city's history since its inception in 1915.
Up until 1998, Norfolk Ship Repair was family-owned and operated. To this
day, the company continues the tradition of providing job and
career opportunities to skilled workers and dedicated service
to Government and commercial customers.
Norfolk Ship Repair is the largest non-nuclear shipyard on the East Coast,
dedicated solely to ship repair. The 110-acre site, located in
the Port of Hampton Roads, is situated in an ice-free harbor sheltered
from major storm tracks. The yard's location makes it one of the
most competitive ship repair firms in the world, providing the
international maritime community with year-round, 24-hour service.

From modest beginnings, performing tugboat and wooden-hull schooner
repairs, Norfolk Ship Repair has grown to become a major force in the Government
and commercial ship repair, modernization, conversion and overhaul
industry. The company has been partnering with commercial customers
since its inception. Since the arrival of the Titan dry dock in
1979, Norfolk Ship Repair has used its expertise to dry dock and repair
the world's cruise ships, starting with the TSS CARNIVALE for
Carnival Cruise lines. Norfolk Ship Repair also prides itself on being a
leader in the refurbishing and conversion of other types of commercial
vessels including ferries, tankers, LNG carriers, cargo liners
and container ships. With Norfolk Ship Repair’S "Time is Money"
philosophy, the company makes the most of the time our customers
spend at our shipyard by delivering the best value for their money.
The time a ship is "out of service" for repair and maintenance
is minimized, and the quality and reliability of our work is maximized.
At Norfolk Ship Repair the customers benefit from knowledge and expertise
shared among our USMR shipyards. We have the capabilities of performing
almost any size and complexity of a commercial project, from routine
repairs to major overhauls and modernization.
When America entered World War I, the company began repairing
Navy vessels, and the U.S. Government became a primary customer.
Through the years, Norfolk Ship Repair continued to serve commercial and
Government vessel owners, while building a solid foundation of
knowledge, expertise and experience, necessary to meet the evolving
needs of its varied customer base. In addition to expertise in
Government work, the company specializes in repairs of all crafts
connected with the exploration, production and transportation
associated with the oil industry, from service and crew boats
to drilling platforms, pipe barges and heavy lift ships.
In the late 1970s, the company underwent a major expansion and
modernization, highlighted by the addition of The Titan, a 950-foot
by 160-foot floating dry dock, complete with attendant pier and
services. In 1999, the shipyard underwent another major remodeling
and revitalization project. Production shops were renovated, new
piers were built, new parking lots were added, office buildings
were completely remodeled and extensive landscaping was added
to the facility. The most recent enhancement is the acquisition
of another dry dock, the 14,000-ton "Old Dominion."
Norfolk Ship Repair is committed to customer satisfaction by providing high-quality
work according to customer specifications and expectations. This
is accomplished through an effective Quality Management System
based on the requirements of the International Standards Organization.
The company is extremely proud to be the first ship repair facility
in Virginia, and one of the first in the world, to receive ISO
9001-1994 certification –– one of the five standards
in the ISO 9000 series. Norfolk Ship Repair underwent two years of extensive
internal and external assessments, meeting all quality system
standards, ranging from management responsibility to procedural
and technical elements. Norfolk Ship Repair received its international certification
from the leading international certification body, Lloyd's Register
Quality Assurance in London, England.
Norfolk Ship Repair is a Class A contractor, offering a wide range of industrial
services to hotels, hospitals, factories, universities, oil refineries
and industrial facilities, to name just a few. Capable
of manning very large projects with minimal or no subcontracting,
our trades people can support fieldwork with full fabrication
and machining expertise. Diesel Marine International (DMI Division) supplies the world's large bore and medium speed diesel
industry with high quality, world-renowned components. Offsite/Downriver
